RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF NURSES'S (ICN) GOVERNING BODY, THE COUNCIL OF NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVES, JUNE 1998 IN VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA. (Canadian Nurse 93 (August 1997): 29).

Be it resolved that ICN support the national nurses' associations and partner organizations in their efforts to reappraise their national history and tradition of nursing; and promote the awareness of the importance of the history of nursing at the international level and disseminate findings on the history of nursing.

Further be it resolved that national nurses' associations encourage and support research on their own national histories without reservations; and promote the dissemination of research findings on the history of nursing in the training and continuing professional education of nurses.

 


 

SUDBURY PEOPLE INTERESTED IN NURSING HISTORY FORM A GROUP. Joyce MacQueen reports that ten people in Sudbury area met to discuss nursing history. Seven of them attended the January meeting. In February, the group will hear the Laurentian University archivist and have a tour of the archives.

Muriel Alma Ward (6 September 1925 — 9 January 1998) graduated in 1947 from the School of Nursing, Hamilton General Hospital. Her nursing career included being an operating room nurse, teaching OR nursing at the Toronto Western Hospital and the Nightingale School of Nursing (Toronto), and later palliative care. City of North York Archives. This repository opened 13 September 1997 in the renovated Dempsey Brother's hardware store which was moved from Sheppard Avenue at Yonge Street to 250 Beecroft Road. Until Sept 1998. "We'll Meet Again" exhibit at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. Go see the Captain Ted Ballantyne's letter. He was the fiancé of Nursing Sister Mary Macdonald, who was killed in action on 19 May 1918 when she was hit by shrapnel during the bombing of a French hospital. BIOGRAPHICAL BITS:

Barnes, Alan. "Nurse Martha Froom [c1896-1998] Served at Front Lines in World War I." Toronto Star 9 January 1998, E5. Martha Froom was born in Ellsworth, Kansas and joined the American Red Cross during World War I. During the war she was with the British Expeditionary Forces and was at the front lines near Rouen. She cared for both German and Allied wounded. Froom married a Canadian fighter pilot in 1918 and returned to live in Canada. She contributed to "Angels of Mercy," a television documentary on nurses in World Wars I and II. Martha Froom died 5 January 1998 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, at the age of 102.

Cronk, L. Bruce. "Irene May Magee Tite [1908-1997]." Globe and Mail (Toronto), 14 February 1997, A22. Irene Tite was born in Vancouver, trained at the Port Simpson and Vancouver General Hospitals. Her nursing career included private duty nursing in Kamloops and matron at the R. W. Lange Memorial Hospital. She died at Waglisla (Bella Bella), BC. Her daughter, Elizabeth is nurse-director of the Bella Bella Medical Clinic.

Randal, Helen Louisa [1876-1963]. Helen Randal was born in Compton, Quebec and was educated as a teacher. She graduated from the Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal. Her nursing career included, superintendent of nurses at the Vancouver General Hospital, editor of the Canadian Nurse, and registrar of the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia. Nursing History Cards. The BC History of Nursing Professional Practice Group now has two sets of nursing history cards: Memorial Church and Christ Church. The latter commemorates the recent international history of nursing conference in Vancouver.

Nursing History Cards. The Canadian Nurses Association's library sells note cards to defray the cost of the calligraphy costs for the CNA Memorial Book. A set of five cards, depicting Florence Nightingale, Jeanne Mance, Isabel Hampton Robb, Mary Agnes Snively and Nora Livingstone, can be ordered for $7.95 plus $2.50 for shipping and handling. Allemang, John. "A Matter of Degrees." University of Toronto Magazine 24 (Summer 1997): 20. John, nephew of Margaret Allemang, included an item about a nurse in this article on the history of degree granting at the University of Toronto. Under a section captioned, "They Dared to Convocate," he wrote, "On Nov. 11, 1919, Edith Catherine Rayside, matron-in-chief of Canadian Nurses overseas during World War I, became the first woman to be given an honorary degree at U of T. But the university hedged a little, giving her not a doctorate but a master's in household science."

"New Stamp Honours VON." Canadian Nurse 93 (June/Juin 1997): 16. In 1997, on May 12 (Florence Nightingale's birthday), Canada Post unveiled a 45 cent stamp (regular mail) to honour the centennial of the VON for Canada. It was designed by Margaret Issenman of Halifax. The stamp depicts a VON nurse c1930s giving care to a patient and modes of transportation: a bicycle and three automobiles.
