LOST AND FOUND:

DeMara, Bruce, and Harold Levy. "Foundation Rescues 19th-Century Papers." Toronto Star, 17 March 1995, A6. A Florence Nightingale letter and picture which was part of the John Beverley Robinson papers purchased in total by the Jackman Foundation has been donated to the Province of Ontario archives. I previewed the letter. Horrors to horrors, it was glued in a scrapbook. However, this is what Nightingale wrote from Scutari on 12 January 1856:

My Dear Sir [Col. LeFroy, Royal Artillery]

I beg to enclose the Purveyors "Confidential Report" which you kindly left with me.

Perhaps you had better read my letter to you (in reply to Dr. Hall's) before you leave Scutari, as it may give rise to further questions which you may desire to discuss with me.

Yours truly,

Florence Nightingale

Gockel, Paul. "The Cottage Appendectomy: 1925 Style." The Muskokan 6 July 1995, B17. In the summer of 1925, Andrew Blair suffered an attack of appendicitis at his Lake Joseph cottage in Ontario. By rowboat, Jessica, his wife, fetched three doctors known to be in the area: a Dr. Brown, anaesthetist, Dr. Roscoe Graham, surgeon, and a Dr. Clark. When the need for immediate surgery became evident, "one doctor exclaimed that a nurse was needed to assist during the surgery." Once again, Jessica rowed to a neighbour, who drove to Port Carling and took a water taxi to pick up Eileen Tobin at Tobin's Island. Eileen had just graduated from nursing school and was home on a visit. The surgery was performed on the Blair's harvest table at the cottage.

CLOSING QUOTATION:

In the afternoon of February 13, 1895, in the parlor of Hotel Thorndike, Boston, Mary Agnes Snively presented her paper, "A Uniform Curriculum for Training Schools," to the members of the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses. At the time she was a Councillor of that organization. Within that paper she said,

We stand to-day upon the attainments of our predecessors, and our gathering here is proof that we realize how much yet remains to be accomplished. We are living not for the present only. Be it ours so to do our part, that those following us may occupy a much higher plane than we now occupy — ours to `open into the future a better and more perfect way.'
